Wool

At Djerf Avenue, we have made a conscious decision to only use recycled or certified responsibly sourced wool in our products.

Wool is a natural protein-based fiber, that is valued for its distinctive origin and versatile properties. Harvested from the fleece of sheep and other animals, this material provides warmth, breathability, and resilience, making it a reliable choice for a wide range of products.

The production of wool begins with shearing, a process that does not harm the animal and that allows the fleece to regrow. This renewable cycle makes wool one of the most enduring natural fibers in use today.

Why wool?
  • Renewability: Wool grows naturally on sheep each year, making it a renewable resource that can be harvested repeatedly without depleting natural systems.

  • Performance Benefits: Wool naturally regulates temperature, absorbs moisture, and resists odors, qualities that enhance both comfort and durability.

  • Biodegradability: Being a protein-based fiber, wool naturally decomposes in soil, returning nutrients back to the earth and minimizing long-term waste.

Why certified responsibly sourced wool (RWS)?
  • Animal Welfare: Ensures sheep are treated responsibly, with high standards for health, nutrition, and protection from unnecessary harm.

  • Sustainable Land Management: Promotes practices that safeguard soil health, biodiversity, and responsible grazing.

  • Supply Chain Transparency: Guarantees that certified wool is tracked from farm to final product for accountability.

  • Consumer Trust: Provides assurance that the wool comes from ethical and sustainable sources.

Care

Wool is a natural, resilient fiber, but it benefits from gentle care to preserve its softness and shape. While some modern wool garments are machine washable, we always recommend following the specific care instructions on your wool clothing.

In many cases, wool is best cared for by hand washing in cool water with a mild detergent, or by using a gentle wool cycle on your washing machine. Because wool fibers naturally resist odor and dirt, your garments often need less frequent washing than other fabrics—airing them out between wears can be enough.

Care Tips
  • Washing: Hand wash or use a gentle wool cycle with a low spin cycle, cool water and mild detergent.

  • Drying: Lay flat to dry, reshaping the garment while damp to maintain its form. Avoid hanging, as this may stretch the fibers.

  • Ironing: Usually unnecessary, as wool resists wrinkles. If needed, use a low heat setting with steam or simply air dry to smooth out creases.

With the right care, wool garments can stay beautiful, comfortable, and durable for decades to come.
